It has been my dream for many years to create an Arctic Grand Slam for ultra-marathoners. On January 2, 2008 I began to make my dream a reality. NURDS (Nantahala Ultra-Running Distance Society) held the first annual Nantahala Fria 100 and running festival in Franklin, NC. The temps ranged from 20 to -5. There was snow, ice, and wind. Yes, the south can provide arctic conditions from time to time! Race #2 was the Arrowhead 135, and #3 was Susitna in AK. The finale is 6633 in Canada.
